"car"aoke

"I've got my back against the record machine...can't you see what I MEAAAAAAAAAANNNN. I might as well jump!"

My kids are strapped in the backseat of the car and stuck listening to me pretend I'm David Lee Roth minus 50 pounds and the spandex. I seem to recall my mom singing along to "Just call me angel of the morning, angel."

What songs do you serenade to your child? Are you more up to date? Say Modest Mouse or even 1990s Pearl Jam? Believe me, I didn't think I would be mimicking anything by Van Halen, especially after their 1984 album is what caused me to chip my front tooth. (Long story, another blog post.)

Good thing my radio is usually tuned to talk radio. Yep, I'm old.

See, I'm not the only one who thought those were the lyrics. Yeah, it didn't make sense but most lyrics, especially by David Lee Roth don't so I didn't worry about it too much.

I've updated my post. Thank you for the correction, Kyle. :)

This reminds me: probably 15 years ago you'd say you didn't like jazz because good ol' Fred listened to it non-stop when you were a kid. But I know you like jazz now. Do you think it's because of or in spite of Fred? Do these early experience shape preferences later? Therefore, will KK and Britta be rabid Van Halen fans when they're in their 30s?

By the way, I blame you: I have Panama-a-a-a-a-a stuck in my head now!

The twins always ask for "Beatles" which means Sgt. Peppers, and when I put it on they say "Sing it, daddy", so there's one.

This morning, I was rocking out to Midnight Vultures on the way to daycare, but I don't think the twins have warmed up to Beck yet. Aaron asked me what a "concubine" is! I said "It's a lady"

Joe, I so know that the "concubine" thing is going to come back to haunt you. I'll be reading your blog and waiting. :)

For me it started wtih Beatles - those are the only songs I could remember when I was comatose caring for Liam as a newborn. Nowhere Man used to put him right to sleep. Now he sings along when I sing Coldplay - he'll even go grab my guitar, hand it to me and start "singing" the song "Trouble." As soon as I start playing and singing he puts his hands over the strings - "that's enough, daddy."

Other than that, he "sings" songs from some of his children's music CD including one (oddly enough) about Sasquatch. When ever he sees a boom box he says "SASQUATCH!!" This is fine except when he does it in public, like...Gymboree. I draw some furrowed brows from parents like "of all the words you could teach him...WHY??"

Love Shack by the B-52s is our toddler's favorite song. They sing most of the words, though "jukebox money" has become "juice box mommy".
