First day of kindergarten

I set my alarm extra early this morning so I could get up and make Karsten a special breakfast for the first day of school. He'd requested piggies and pancakes. He wouldn't eat the piggies without coercion though.

Britta brought her backpack too -- and her "oh dear" which is Eeyore in Britta speak. On the ride to school I asked him if he was nervous and he said, "no way!" It's nice to start school with that kind of self confidence. We got to the school parking lot and before I knew it Karsten was unbuckled and out the door. He had run all the way inside the school. He didn't know where he was going so he ran back outside so I was able to find him.

He met a few new kids and was happy to see his old pre-school friend Riess. The kindergarten teacher knew Andy had missed Orientation so she sent me to the office to pick up some forms.

In the office the receptionist had me fill out some paperwork. I asked a few questions and she wasn't very friendly towards me. I mentioned that I had been out of town and that my husband had forgotten to go to Orientation. "OH!" she said, "say no more. Here's all the paperwork you need." Suddenly I was no longer Flaky Mom. We were Women United by Flaky Dads.

Funny how it is perfectly acceptable for a Dad to miss Orientation but not so in the role of Mom. I've never seen books written about the Daddy Rat Race but there is definitely a Mommy one going on. My time staying with my mother-in-law in Edinburgh was a bit of a treat. She grocery shopped and cooked! Even on the days when I go to work and Andy comes home first he'll call me to ask me what I'm making for dinner.

How did we moms end up taking on such a role? We should all unite together and cut each other some slack.

All this talk about dinner is making me hungry... what's for dinner?
