Closing the deal
Yesterday I sent Karsten doorbelling for his "Turkey Trot" fundraiser to pay for the playground equipment at his school. Most of the houses in my neighborhood have stairs that you have to climb in order to reach the front door. I had Britta in the stroller so we just waited for our salesman at the bottom. I could hear Karsten, the master salesman making his pitch.
The door would open and Karsten would say, "Would you like to sponsor me in the Turkey Trot? You need to sign here and give me your money." His direct approach really worked and within less than 45 minutes he had met his goal of $200! At first he was upset when he got checks. He wanted cold, hard cash but he eventually figured out that checks are a good thing too.
He also scored chocolate chip cookies, promises of extra halloween candy when he comes back trick-or-treating, and some silly putty. One neighbor said, "he really knows how to close the deal." I told Andy he needs to hire Karsten to work at his company.
