Where are the women?
Jeff Zeldman blogs and researches what I've been wondering too:

As a woman in the tech industry, specifically the design side, I often wonder how long I will last in this male dominated world. While in college I recall a professor quizzing one of our guest speakers regarding his thoughts as a man in a "pink collar" job. What pink collar? I don't even see many cute shoes these days. I have been designing websites since the first version of netscape debuted back in 1995. I sometimes think the only reason I've lasted this long is because I've been grandfathered, I mean "grandmothered in." It is hard to believe after working in a career so long that I still wouldn't think I have all the right skills to succeed.
I hope the industry doesn't continue to narrow, although I do see it going in this direction. I hope the only reason I was able to break into this industry wasn't because of early ambition, as Andy suggested. It is a shame that the high tech industry doesn't appreciate more diversity.
I'm glad someone as high profile as Zeldman is asking the tough questions. I hope he gets some answers.

My first question after reading this is where are all the women in the different industries. Even after a quick search, I really can't say...
