Diva vs Geek: which is more expensive?

Since the purchase of my geeky new camera I've been buying all kinds of stuff: camera case, filter, and memory card. That's doesn't even begin to cut it for all the accessories for it that I really want to buy. I ran across a $2k lens that looked pretty sweet!

As for my hair, shoes, makeup and clothes... not sure that being a diva is any more expensive than being a geek. In fact, I am willing to take a gander that being a diva is more cost effective than being a geek.

For some reason I feel better now.

Hubby are you reading this? Mother's day idea

tiana.jpg

My neighbor Tiana has a new line of personalized jewelry. I've been eyeing them for myself so I got the scoop from her:

~ Personalized necklaces and bracelets (either linked bracelets or cuffs).
~ All made with sterling silver chain and findings
~ Can be personalized with a name and/or date (letters are 3/32" tall) or initials (letters are 1/4" tall)
~ Prices range from $30 to $50
~ Delivery time is usually 7-10 days

Like how I'm giving the hubby lots of notice? That is so kind of me.

For the people who can't just walk down the street to put in their order here is her Etsy store link: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5192529

A new book

51HH1RK64-L._SS400_.jpg

Friend and former AIGA board member with me, Steffanie Lorig (and husband Rick) have just published a new book, Such a Silly Baby.

I wrote an email to her, "Yay! This looks amazing Steffanie. Can't wait to get my hands on your book. Big congrats. You continue to inspire."

Because in addition to writing this book she has also built Art With Heart into wonderful charity focusing on healing children in crisis through creativity. Steffanie is indeed a huge inspiration.

The "look sexy" shot but I must have heard "look dorky"

3. The pants that are long enough: priceless.

I went into yet another teeny bopper store because I'd heard rumors of long inseams. I found a pair of "long" jeans but the sales lady said, "you probably want the extra long jeans that we keep in the back of the store."

"Yes, yes", I told her, "I will follow you."

"No, I mean the way back of the store. I will bring the jeans out to you."

So out from the depths of the warehouse area she brings me three pairs of jeans and this pair fit. Without looking at the price tag I said, "I'll take them." When I find a pair of 36 inch inseam, I buy. I now know not to even bother trying on jeans for normal people. And I will pay whatever price tag is on the jeans

'08 is off to a good start with this new "going out" uni.

Stained glass anyone?

louise-002.jpg

I found this glass artist, Joby Shimomura at Tiana's holiday craft show. I grabbed her card and finally looked at her site. I think had I known about her while we were remodeling I would have commissioned a piece for our bathroom. Maybe a simple starfish? I love her work and her prices are so reasonable. Great stuff!

My black Saturday

Lots of fun stuff going on December 1st.

Tiana is hosting a craft show of local artists with:

Jewelry, Ornaments, Baby gifts, Original Art, Hand Blown Glass, Tasty goodies, Cards, Handmade Photo Albums, Knitted goods, Accessories, Home Decor and more!

Another one of my neighbors will be there selling works of art with found ceramics and glass from the beach here.

The show is in Normandy Park.

The second show that day is a benefit for Art With Heart. It is called A Very Sheri Trunk Show at Studio 3 in Seattle. My friend Amber is debuting her clothing line, Girl Crush. I'm excited to see Amber's clothing line launch. I wore one of her dresses to a wedding and it was my favorite dress ever. Ever.

If anyone wants to meet up let me know!

I'm having a party

One of my friends is selling skin care by Arbonne. I tried out the anti-aging stuff this summer and was like, "ooo, this is good stuff!" Gotta think about this anti-aging stuff now as my friend reminded me. My friend likes it so much she's probably going to quit her job at a the largest software company in Redmond to concentrate on selling it full-time. Now that is product endorsement!

So if anyone wants to come to my girlie party it is on Sunday, December 2nd. Let me know so I can send you an invitation.

Musical Tofu Buys a CD

I rarely buy cds. If anything I may buy a track on itunes (and now Amazon) here or there but I probably shell out for a full album only every 5 years.

And contrary to my LastFM profile I actually listen to more music than Def Leppard or the Beatles. I just prefer to allow other people to pick my music. I especially love Pandora where I only have to enter in a few names of artists or songs I like and the site picks great music for me.

But something happened a few weeks ago. When Greg was in town a few of us randomly went to see the movie Once. I immediately fell in love with this movie that is a musical but isn't a musical. Finally I broke down and bought the soundtrack. It is a good one to listen to while working. I may have to buy the DVD when it comes out which is even a bigger deal since I buy DVDs even less often than I buy CDs.

The movie was about passion, motivation and creating. I think the last time I bought a CD and DVD (actually VHS!) was for the Big Night which was also about passion, motivation and the creative process. I have found my weakness for music and movies.

Now for the fun stuff

laptop sleeve

The laptop bags at the Apple store...zzzzz... oh sorry, I fell asleep thinking how boring they are. I did a search for "laptop sleeve" on Etsy and found this great seller, Janine King with all kinds of fun bags for my new computer. The bags are about the same price as the boring Apple store ones, some are even quite a bit cheaper.

Solo Shopping

I did some shopping this week and had some interesting experiences. First, I developed what I like to call the Bar Raising Test for buying clothes. If I can't bring a friend to tell me "your butt looks big in those pants" then I need a way to determine these things on my own. What I do is wear my favorite outfit and if the clothes I'm considering buying looks better on me than my Bar Raising Outfit I give myself the green light to buy it.

Secondly, I found myself completely out of my shopping league this week. I was frantically trying to find a dress for Becca's wedding. I had already searched everything at Pacific Place, Nordstrom, Barneys and Macy's. I had never been in to Mario's so I thought it would be worth a try. A cute guy in a suit offers me Perrier. Since most of my shopping is done in warehouse settings (Costco) I was expecting a little styrofoam cup sample. Not so. Cute guy in suit brings me a glass of sparkling mineral water in a crystal glass (!). I tried to act like this was a normal shopping experience for me but I slipped with a "WOW!" Couldn't he see I was wearing Gap pants and a shirt with a stain on it? If not, the flip flops truly should have blown my cover.

I browsed over to the dress section trying to play it cool again. I chugged my perrier and got out of there when I saw the $2000 price tags per dress. Sorry Becca! I needed a decimal point or two removed before I can shop there.

Prologue:
I did find a dress at BCBG.

**And no I didn't wear my favorite dress for my bar raising test.
